It was a long day, to say the very least.
Edward had spent the majority of the day doing paperwork. If there was one aspect about his job that he disliked the most, it was paperwork. Being that he worked in the Death Chamber, studying death, there wasn't exactly ever anything exciting in terms of paperwork. It was typically just recording a lot of data down about his studies, or the reviewing the studies of his peers. He didn't hate his job, which probably would be odd to to other people if they knew exactly what he did at his job, but that was the beauty of being an Unspeakable.
It was nearly seven in the evening; late to be getting off of work especially for a Monday. His beginning of the week paperwork ended up taking much longer than he had initially thought. Luckily, he was done and he was ready to turn in for the night. Exiting his office, he began to ponder about his late dinner. Evenings were usually spent getting off of work, enjoying a nice and quiet meal with a glass of wine, then reading until he would feel like getting to bed. After the grueling day of paperwork, he was very looking forward to doing so.
Ed entered the empty Ministry elevator. Being as late as it was, he wasn't surprised to find it empty. He wondered how many people, if any, would even hop on between his floor and the ground level. There were no more office memos floating about either, so he figured that most people really had headed home. For a moment, he thought he would be enjoying the rare occasion of an empty elevator ride but then the elevator stopped. Edward let out a quiet sigh as he looked anywhere but at the opening door as a ding let out.

Lottie often worked late. In fact, she couldn’t remember the last time that she left the ministry and there were still people in the building besides the odd straggler and the security guards who would bid her farewell as she slid into one of the fireplaces in the foyer. She felt like she worked the best when no one else was around. And this night was no exception.
She closed and locked the door of the Department of Magical Education office behind her and crossed the hall to the elevator at the end of it. She pushed the button and waited for it to appear, expecting it to be empty as usual. However, the doors opened and there was another already inside. “Good evening.” Lottie said kindly as she stepped inside as well. The thought of just waiting for an empty elevator to follow to avoid the awkward silence crossed her mind, but, her ride would be silent anyway so why bother?

Edward managed to avoid eye contact with the newcomer until they spoke, and his eyes couldn't help but automatically flicker to meet the owner of the person who joined him on the elevator. It was a girl. A rather pretty one, he allowed himself to think momentarily before gruffly letting out a slightly muffled "Good evening," himself. Pretty girl or not, Edward was still rather closed off from interpersonal relationships especially with people he worked with; directly or not.
Ed fully intended on staying quiet for the remainder of the elevator ride to the main level, and something told him this girl probably intended the same. Edward knew he had grown into his looks, and the effect he could have on some women, but as soon as they got even a sample of his personality they were almost always immediately turned off. The doors closed behind the girl and they began to move, but only for a brief moment. There was a giant jolt of the elevator abruptly stopping in its tracks, certainly causing the inhabitants to likely lose their balance. Ed let out a gruff frustrated sound as he recollected himself and stood straight back up, glancing at the girl to assess her person as he did so. He assumed the elevator would just resume, as it often did... but it didn't. "Oh bloody hell," he growled under his breath.
They were stuck.
