Personality
Edward keeps mostly to himself. He isn't shy, but does not go out of his way to speak to others unless he is spoken to. He is private and keeps his personal affairs to himself. He has a very small inner circle that he socializes with, but still keeps relatively closed off about his personal life even from them. He masks his feelings very well from others, which causes him to usually come across as very standoffish or cold.
Some may think of him as manipulative, but Edward thinks before he acts or speaks. Every move, every word is very calculated and thought out. Ed never wants to be caught off guard or surprised, so he thinks things through very thoroughly. Sometimes he is even guilty of overthinking, but he hides it well. Being an Unspeakable, he has had much practice hiding things or lying. Sometimes for his own personal gain, which makes him rather cunning.
All of that cold, hard exterior does is work to hide his soft side deep inside. The only people privy to this side of him is his beloved family, who he would do absolutely anything for. One wouldn't know it, but they are the only people on this planet he doesn't put a mask on for. So while he may come off as rude or mean, he is also incredibly loyal to those he loves.

History
Edward Ludo Fortescue was born on Halloween in 2032, the middle child of Robb & Arabella Fortescue. Robb was a Fortescue, of course, so the Fortescue children grew up in and out of the ice cream shop, sundaes in hand and sugar rushes all the time. Edward lived happily as a child when it was just he and his family. While he was probably the most quiet of his siblings, he was a happy child. At least as happy as he thought one could be. When he went to Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin, that was when things began to change. Edward was quiet, and as a child he was far more shy. A bit of a bookworm, he was often made fun of by other children. He was not at all athletic and he had not yet come into his own looks as a small child, so he began to keep more and more to himself as a result of such bullying.
As Edward progressed through school, he began to realize there was less of a problem with himself and moreso with others if they were bullying other children. He began to take things less personal and just kept to himself and focused on his studies. This ended up having a bit of an affect on him later in life, as it just further made him closed off from others. He had some friends of course, but he truly preferred solitude above all else.
His school years were rather uneventful, being that Ed did not really participate in any extra curriculars. He looked forward to his summers where he could return home and be with his family, whom were the only people he felt himself around. He had some of them at school, of course, but at school he masked his feelings a bit more even to them. He was lucky his family understood his quirks, and he was thankful they never judged him for them. He may be the son of a silly ice cream shop owner, but he loved his family, he would kill for his family; and they were and are to this day, the most important people in the world to him.
After school, Edward interned at the Department of Mysteries. It was a strict job that required secrecy, but that was something that Ed was rather good at already so it was really no trouble. Ed was rather captivated by the Department of Mysteries, and realized after one year he desired to become an Unspeakable. If he was alone, there was no one to hide his job from. So after another couple years, Edward landed a job in the Death Chamber. He of course, cannot disclose such specific information to his family, but they do know he is an Unspeakable.
